May 2nd: Charleston's History of Pirates

Speaker: Eric Lavender

Our introduction and overview of Charleston pirates will be presented by gifted storyteller, pirate historian, and certified Charleston Tour Guide, Eric Lavender. Eric and his wife, Sabrina, own Charleston Pirate Tours and Capt Bob, their blue & gold macaw often accompanies him on his fun and educational walking tours. Eric has had numerous media appearances and is currently working on a book about Charles Vane that includes an overview of pirate history in the SC Lowcountry.

May 9th: Pirate Hunters of the SC Coast

Speaker: Dr. Benjamin Schaffer

Dr. Benjamin Schaffer will speak about the naval efforts to hold Carolina pirates to account. Ben holds a Ph.D. in Atlantic world and maritime history from the University of New Hampshire. An alum of College of Charleston, he also teaches in the history department there as an adjunct professor. His book manuscript, Self Defense and Sea Power: The Provincial Navies of the British Atlantic World, c. 1630-1776, is currently in review at the University of Alabama Press.

May 16th: Piratically, Feloniously, and in an Hostile Manner - Rogue Women on the High Seas in the Golden Age of Piracy

Speaker: Carin Bloom

This Zoom presentation by historian Carin Bloom will examine the stories of female pirates like Ann Bonny and Mary Read, that are shrouded in mystery. From the famous to the less well-known, female rogues have captured the imaginations of history-lovers for generations for the ways they blurred the lines of acceptability in society, were fiercely independent, and called into question not-so-established ideas surrounding gender and identity. Carin will explore these themes and she might even throw in a sea chantey or two – come sing along!

May 13th: The Crew of the Charles Revenge

Living History Day at The Powder Magazine

 

The Crew of the Charles Revenge are a group of living historians from the SC Lowcountry and Georgia Coasts.  This knowledgeable crew portrays pirates of the Golden Age of Piracy, privateers, provincial navy sailors, and Royal Navy sailors, c. 1700-1740. They will be camped out in the Powder Magazine cannon yard! Come by for a visit!

Living History Day at The Powder Magazine

 

Carin Bloom is a public historian with undergraduate and graduate degrees in historic sites archaeology. Her passion over the past two decades has been sharing the hidden histories of the Colonial era with interested audiences through conventional and unconventional programs. Bringing diverse narratives to light that have been long ignored is a particular focus of hers. She will portray the pirate Mary Reed.

May 23rd: Blackbeard's Sunken Prize - Excavation and Analysis of the Pirate's Flagship, Queen Anne's Revenge

Speaker: Dr. Linda F. Carnes-McNaughton

​

Dr. Linda Carnes-McNaughton earned her PhD at UNC -Chapel Hill and has worked as a professional archaeologist, researcher, and cultural resources manager for over 40 years.  Her interest in global pottery led her to volunteer on the Queen Anne’s Revenge Shipwreck Project, identifying pottery and other materials found on the 1718 shipwreck.. In 2018 she and Mark Wilde-Ramsing co-authored a book devoted to the QAR project titled, Blackbeard’s Sunken Prize: the 300-year voyage of Queen Anne’s Revenge, published by UNC Press.
